Pirandai /adamant creeper or Cissus quadrangularis is a perennial plant of the grape family. It is commonly known as veldt grape, winged treevine or adamant creeper. The species is native to tropical Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and much of Africa.

Also known as Karalakam Bone setter plant ( Hadjod, Pirandai, Veldt Grape, Devil's backbone, Adamant creeper, Asthi samharaka, Asthisamhara , Pirandai Plant has been used in various Ayurvedic classical medicines to heal broken bones and injured ligaments and tendons. In siddha medicine, it is considered a tonic and analgesic, and is believed to help heal broken bones, thus its name.

Pirandai is very helpful for ailments of the stomach as well as heart.

  • Its botanical name is ‘Cissus quadrangularis’ and is also called ‘viggravalli’.   • Our elders recommend consuming pirandai at least twice a week .

  • Piles can be treated by this paste form; it will control bleeding at the mouth of anus due to piles trouble.

  • The pirandai can be ghee-fried and one teaspoon of it can be taken both in the morning and evening to cure the piles related issues.

Ingredients

1 tbsp udad dal

1 tbsp chana dal

Salt

Pinch of asafoetida powder

Few curry leaves .

4/5 red chilies

1 onion chopped ( optional ) or use coconut

1 Berry size Tamrind .

2 handfuls of cleaned Pirandai stems .

Method

Pirandai when handled without washing will cause itching , so first wash them well , dry on a cloth , then apply coconut oil or sesame oil on both hands before continuing to process them for cooking .

  • First , remove the extra veins, tendrils, and small leaves, , then chop at the segments , joints, which break off with a light twist . Choose tender pirandai for cooking as they tastegood and fresh ,the more mature ones can be used to make Pirandai oil .

  • Usually , when we break off at the joints, we can easily peel them off from four sides, how ever it may cause itching , so beter to use a good peeler , to pull away the exterior skin . The inner suculent part is what we need for cooking .

  • Wash and clean Pirandai stems by discarding leaves , peeling off the outer skin carefully after applying oil on hands .

  • Chop all the stems .

  • Add oil to a pan , add the chopped stems of pirandai . sautee these well till they seem tender .

  • Next roast the dals and other ingredients . remove dals and red chilies when they seem aromatic .add asafoetida powder .

  • Sautee onions, curry leaves a nd oil fry tamrind bits .

  • allow all ingredients to cool .

  • Grind all ingredients, with salt to a thick coarse paste or as preferred.

  • Delicious healthy thogayal is ready .

  • Enjoy with curd rice, or just mix with rice and ghee and have it with papad .
