Aadi Perukku is an important festival in Tamilnadu esp in the agricultural community . Called Aadi Perukku, popularly called Padinettam ( meaning 18 th day in this month ) Perukku, is a unique occasion dedicated to all the perennial river basins of Tamil intended to celebrate the water rising levels due to the onset of monsoon season, which is expected to occur invariably on the 18th day of the solar month of Aadi. The farmers are expecting a good monsoon and begin their sowing activities . Therefore special prayers are offered at various water bodies and rivers esp River Cauvery where the water is seen rising in volume from this day . The word Perukku means rising as water flows will be more and rising from this day .

The festival Aadi Perukku is significant festival in the life of a farmer.There is a specific mythological belief that whatever we do on this auspicious day will return to us manifold.

Farmers start their sowing in the month of Aadi (July-August) so that they can do their harvest after 6 months in january which is celebrated as Pongal Festival (harvest festival) in the month of Thai (Jan)

Special prayers are offered along River banks , variety rice us cooked and offered as Neivediyam .

All the women prepare special food and various varieties of rice including the Chithranam and distribute it among friends, relatives and family members. They visit near river and lakes and light a special lamp made up of rice flour and jaggery and they place it on mango leaves. Offer flowers, turmeric and yellow thread near the lamp. They float these lamps in the river.

People in big cities will perform the prayers by offering and praying with a pot of water as symbolic of River Cauvery and prepare rice varieties for Neivediyam.

Hence, prayers are offered to Rivers and water sources, praying for a sustainable water resource and a better yield in the following season.
