Paruppu thogayal powder / spicy lentil chutney powder.
A true lifesaver for those days when you crave flavor and nutrition without spending hours in the kitchen! These chutneys, or thogayals as they're known in Tamil, are a delightful solution that can be whipped up in mere minutes. In fact, within just 10 minutes, you can enjoy a delicious and healthy thogayal that will leave your taste buds tingling.
For those particularly lazy days, I've got an even quicker recipe to share! Simply prepare a bottle or container of the basic dry ingredients in advance. Then, when the mood strikes for some thogayal, just add some freshly grated coconut and give it a whirl in the mixie for a couple of turns to blend the coconut with the coarse powder. Voila! You've got a tasty thogayal ready to enjoy in no time.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup Toor dal/split pigeon peas
4-5 red dry chillies , (or as preferred by you )
Generous pinch of Asafoetida powder or crystals.
A marble size tamrind
salt as required.
1 tbsp sesame oil
Method
Roast all ingredients except salt , slowly till a fine aroma wafts across, the tamrind will turn brittle.
Remove, keep aside to cool.
Store in a container , or a glass jar till required.
This is a tasty delicious powder which can be had with dosas or idlis too with a tsp of sesame oil.
To prepare the thogayal
Take 3 tbsp of the thogayal powder, add some grated fresh coconut, add a sprinkle of water and coarsely grind on or two turns in the mixie and your fresh thogayal is ready.
Tips
Some add 1/2 tsp of pepper and some cumin also in this recipe, I have skipped it.
