Tamrind rice Puliyodharai

Puliyodharai

Delicious spicy tangy Puliyodharai ( tamrind rice ) made as a one pot dish in pressure cooker . This recipe comes handy for the days when you crave for a spicy tamrind rice and nothing else. The pressure cooker method solves this and all you have to do is add the required ingredients for one time and cook the dish . The youtube video below will show you the process.

Ingredients :

1 goose berry ball of tamrind soaked in warm water .

1 cup rice washed and drained .

3 tbsp sesame oil .

1 tsp mustard seeds ,

1 tbsp chana dal

1/2 tsp udad dal .

1 tbsp black sesame seeds.

A pinch of turmeric powder .

some peanuts .

1/4 tsp methi seeds .

sautee well

3-4 red chillies .

Some curry leaves.

2 tbsp chili powder or as needed

Pinch of Asafoetida powder .

1tbsp rasam powder ( optional )


Method :

Take a pressure cooker, heat it, add sesame oil ,splutter mustard seeds ,

add chana dal, udad dal, methi seeds , sesame seeds , curry leaves and red chillies., peanuts ,

Sautee all these in oil .

Add tamrind water, about 1 and 1/2 cup , allow to boil , add turmeric powder , salt,

when water comes to a good boil , add the drained soaked rice, allow to boil well .

Pressure cook for 2 whistles .

Allow the cooker to cool down completely, open and give a gentle stir . add 1 tb sp of rasam powder , mix well . The heat of the rice is enough to cook the powder . It wont taste raw, how ever if you feel like it, you can add it to the rice and tamrind water mixture , before closing cooker .

Pressure cooker tamrind rice is ready .
