Muthusaram | Mullu Murukku

Muthusaram

Diwali snacks are very addictive and one feels like trying as many as possible . While it is always a good idea to plan and prepare these savory snacks the good old way by roasting , blending ingredients. Sometimes it is not possible due to lack of time .

Our moms and grandmoms had very little work pressure or nil , as most would be occupied with household chores , cooking for the family was their solé preoccupation. Diwali meant a fortnight of preparations well before the festival . It is hardly inconceivable to imagine present day women being dedicated with work pressure on one hand would find it stressful to cope with extra festival cooking .

This is where simple recipes can be tried with ready ingredients from stores . I have successfully tried many snack varieties with just store bought flours and pretty impressed with the results .

Muthusaram is a traditional snack which uses both chana dal and moong dal . I have tried the authentic way earlier and got expected results, great taste and aroma .

Mullu Muruku, also known as Mullu Thenkuzhal or Mullu Murukku, is a popular South Indian snack that is often prepared during festivals and special occasions. It belongs to the family of murukku, which are crispy, spiral-shaped snacks made from a combination of rice flour and urad dal flour.

The distinctive feature of Mullu Muruku is its texture, which is characterized by small, pointed ridges, giving it a unique appearance. The dough is typically made by combining rice flour, urad dal flour, cumin seeds, asafoetida (hing), and sometimes butter or ghee. This mixture is then shaped using a special "achu" (mould) or through piping, forming the murukku's signature spiral pattern.

The prepared dough is deep-fried until golden brown, resulting in a crispy and savory snack. Mullu Muruku is known for its delicious taste and crunchy texture, making it a favorite among those who enjoy South Indian snacks.

This time I skipped chana dal but used only moong dal by powdering it in mixie jar . Did not even roast it , yet the Mullu murukku turned out super awesome.
